Tokusatsu
Tokusatsu films focus on kaiju (giant/weird monsters), superheros, and giant robots.
Kaiju and related movies I've seen, in order:
- King Kong (2003) – a great movie, if a bit long
- Godzilla Minus One (2023) – well done; dark, good special effects; happy ending
- Kong: Skull Island (2017) – an unnecessary return to King Kong's origin story. Too Hollywood-y and woke. The twist of King Kong actually being a good guy was pretty lame. This movie mostly felt like it was meant to establish Monarch's role in the MonsterVerse and show that a lot of kaijus are just misunderstood good guys.
- Godzilla vs Kong (2021) – good fights, but the “twist” of King Kong and Godzilla both being good guys and working together to fight evil once they figure out they're on the same team is disappointing. Monarch sucks and the “kids work together to fight against evil MegaCorp that's strayed too far” subplot was unnecessary.
- Shin Ultraman (2022) – fun kaiju / superhero film. Some scenes are very similar to Neon Genesis Evangelion. My wife hated it and complained through the whole movie but ultimately gave it a 7/10
- Mothra vs Godzilla (1964) – good special effects, good battles. But the magical tiny twin girls were kind of unnecessary. Holds up pretty well 60 years later.
- Shin Kamen Rider (2023) – lots of parallels and contrasts with Western superhero films. Fun movie. Also has some overlap with NGE, which makes sense, given its director. Wife score: 8.5!
- Frankenstein Conquers the World (1965) – the premise of this movie is awesome. Execution is just OK. Feels like a parody of King Kong vs Godzilla
- Godzilla x Kong: New Empire (2024) – generic woke Hollywood action movie that just happens to have giant monsters in it, a definite 3/10. The special effects are better than Godzilla vs Kong but this is a hollow and soulless film.
